Project Overview
Group photos can be tricky to photograph correctly, and large group photos are technical and extremely difficult to properly execute.
Grand Rapid’s medical practice West Michigan Cardiology hired me to plan, arrange and photograph their group of cardiologists and medical providers.
After location scouting for several weeks, we decided to shoot at Frederik Meijer Garden, in the new Garden Pavilion. My crew and I had shot there recently for another project, so I was familiar with the staff at FMG, the space we’d be photographing in, and the lighting in the room which changes depending on the time of day.
Given their profession, I wanted to give them flexibility with the final images. With this in mind, I chose to approach the photo as a composite image. After a few test shots and arranging everyone, I shot a few images of the empty set for a baseline photo. I then moved everyone to their location from the test shots, and a few other locations to give some flexibility when it came time to edit. The final image is made up of several hundred layers in Photoshop.
By taking the additional time to photograph and edit this way, West Michigan Cardiology will have more options to add or remove practitioners over time. If a doctor leaves and starts a new practice, we can simply remove him from the image. If a new doctor joins the practice, we can add her. And so on..
