Exploring a New Chapter: Senior Portraits in West Michigan
As a professional photographer with over 20 years of experience, specializing in commercial photography, I’ve had the privilege of capturing a wide variety of subjects and projects. Over the years, I’ve primarily focused on working with small businesses and startups, helping them tell their unique stories through high-quality imagery. However, something interesting has been happening lately—more and more people have been asking me about senior portraits. While this wasn't a type of photography I concentrated on in the past, I’ve started to embrace it, and I’m really enjoying the process.
Why I Started Taking Senior Portraits
Senior portraits are a rite of passage, a way to capture the excitement and anticipation that comes with stepping into adulthood. After receiving numerous requests over the years, I realized this was something I could offer that fits right into my passion for creating memorable, high-quality portraits. Senior year is such a significant time in a young person's life, and I’ve found it incredibly rewarding to be part of that experience.
At first, I hesitated to take on senior portrait sessions because, traditionally, my business has focused on commercial photography. My expertise lies in making businesses and brands look their best, from headshots to promotional images. However, portrait photography—especially senior portraits—has its own set of challenges and rewards that I’ve come to appreciate. The creative freedom, the energy of the seniors, and the opportunity to capture their personality and individuality is something I didn’t expect to enjoy so much.
Capturing Seniors in West Michigan
Most of my photography work is based in West Michigan, specifically in and around Grand Rapids, where I’ve developed a deep connection with the community. Senior portraits in West Michigan have their own charm. We’re blessed with a beautiful range of outdoor settings—from the urban backdrop of downtown Grand Rapids to the natural beauty of Lake Michigan’s shoreline and parks. Incorporating these stunning locations into my sessions allows me to create images that feel both timeless and personal.
During my most recent senior session, we chose to shoot in a blend of urban and natural settings, taking advantage of the golden hour light in a local park. My client was a high school senior from a nearby town, excited about her upcoming graduation. As I guided her through the session, I found myself genuinely enjoying the dynamic process. We went from capturing candid moments of laughter to perfectly posed shots that showed her personality, creating a gallery of images that her family will cherish for years.
Why Quality Matters in Senior Photography
One thing that remains constant, whether I’m shooting for a business or a graduating senior, is my dedication to providing the best possible service. I’ve always believed that professional photography is more than just snapping a picture—it’s about creating a visual story. This philosophy translates seamlessly into senior photography. I’m committed to delivering the highest quality images and prints because these portraits are something that families will treasure for a lifetime. From the initial consultation to the final delivery of prints, my goal is to make the process enjoyable and stress-free while ensuring the final product exceeds expectations.
A New Focus, Same Dedication
Though senior photography wasn’t something I initially planned on doing, it’s quickly becoming a significant part of Ryan Velting Photography. Every session is an opportunity to connect with these young adults, hear their stories, and help them mark this pivotal moment in their lives. And while I’m still very much rooted in commercial photography—working with businesses across West Michigan and beyond—I’m excited to continue offering senior portrait sessions as a growing part of my portfolio.
If you’re looking for senior portraits that capture the true essence of this exciting time, I’d love to help. With my years of experience and dedication to providing only the highest quality images, you can trust that your senior session will be both fun and memorable.
