Project Overview - Capturing the Impossible: Photographing Johnny Agar’s Book Signing Event
I’ve been fortunate to call Johnny Agar and his incredible family friends for years. If you’re not familiar with Johnny’s story, you’re in for some inspiration. Growing up with cerebral palsy, Johnny was told he would never walk. But instead of accepting limitations, he shattered them. His journey led him to compete in Ironman triathlons—a feat that requires a level of perseverance and courage most of us can barely imagine.
This remarkable story is beautifully chronicled in his book, The Impossible Mile. The book details Johnny’s life, his challenges, and his determination to rewrite his own narrative. As Michael Phelps—yes, that Michael Phelps—puts it:
“Johnny Agar is a true inspiration as a person and an athlete. Where most might see nothing but obstacles, he sees nothing but opportunities. Johnny’s commitment to pursuing his dreams and sharing his journey along the way is a tremendous gift to us all.”
– Michael Phelps, most decorated Olympian in history
When Johnny published The Impossible Mile, it marked a major milestone in his already inspiring journey. I’ve had the privilege of photographing Johnny on many occasions, but capturing this event was something truly special.
The Book Signing Event: A Celebration of Resilience
Johnny’s book signing event wasn’t just about a book—it was a celebration of resilience, family, and community. The atmosphere was electric, with friends, fans, and supporters gathering to congratulate him. Photographing this event was a wonderful opportunity to document not only Johnny’s joy but also the genuine love and admiration that filled the room.
As an event photographer, moments like these are why I love what I do. From candid shots of Johnny sharing laughs with attendees to close-ups of The Impossible Mile proudly displayed on the table, every image told a story. The challenge was to capture the emotion, the pride, and the significance of the moment in a way that reflected Johnny’s journey.
Event Photography Tips for Special Occasions
Photographing a book signing event like Johnny Agar’s requires a thoughtful approach:
Capture Key Moments: Ensure you document pivotal moments, such as the author signing books, interacting with guests, or speaking to the crowd. These are the highlights people will treasure.
Focus on Details: Don’t overlook the smaller details, like the book cover, personalized inscriptions, or any decor that sets the scene. These add depth to the event’s story.
Concentrate on the Candid Shots: While posed photos can be important, candid shots often capture the most authentic emotions. A laugh, a handshake, or a heartfelt hug can tell the story better than words.
Work with the Lighting: Book signings often take place in venues with unpredictable lighting. Whether you’re working with natural light, fluorescent bulbs, or a mix of both, knowing how to adapt is crucial for professional results.
Why Event Photography Matters
Events like Johnny Agar’s book signing are about more than just the occasion—they’re about capturing memories that will last a lifetime. Professional event photography ensures these moments are documented beautifully and authentically, so they can be shared and celebrated for years to come.
For me, photographing this event was an honor. Johnny’s story has always been one of hope and perseverance, and I’m grateful to play a small part in helping him share it with the world.

I’ve been friends with Johnny Agar and his amazing family for years. Johnny wrote a book - The Impossible Mile - about growing up with cerebral palsy, being told he’d never walk, then beating all odds and competing in Ironman Triathlons. Truly awe-inspiring.
Johnny is an inspiration. As Michael Phelps ( yes, THAT Michael Phelps ) wrote of Johnny - "Johnny Agar is a true inspiration as a person and an athlete. Where most might see nothing but obstacles, he sees nothing but opportunities. Johnny’s commitment to pursuing his dreams and sharing his journey along the way is a tremendous gift to us all." -Michael Phelps, most decorated Olympian in history
While I’ve had the opportunity to photograph Johnny on many occasions, this project was a bit different, celebrating the publishing of his book.
